Kafir Dalam Al-Qur’an: Studi Analisis Penafsiran Mahmud Yunus Dalam Tafsir Al-Qur’an Al-Qarim

Abstract

The term 'kafir' (which is also a 'sensitive' issue) has various meanings. Its diversity shows that it is not limited to a word that is only addressed to people outside of Islam, who are identically labeled heretics and go to hell, but can also be addressed to Muslims themselves. This paper discusses the views of Mahmud Yunus regarding the meaning of infidel in his Tafsir Al-Qur'an Al-Karim. By using the type of library research research, namely the library method, and data processing using descriptive-analytic, clarifying the results of the research that the socio-historical context has a great influence on Mahmud Yunus in understanding the text of the Qur'an, especially its relation to the meaning of kafir. In interpreting the verses related to the word kafir, Mahmud Yunus relates it to a phenomenon that occurred in his day, namely interpreting infidel by looking at the behavior and daily life of the Indonesian people. For Mahmud Yunus, a person is said to be a disbeliever not only when doing actions that exclude someone from Islam, but "not being grateful" for the blessings that Allah has given is also included in disbelief. It is clear that in interpreting the Qur'an Mahmud Yunus has also ruled out the history of the pre-Islamic word infidel. Here, the subjectivity of the interpretation is seen, especially with regard to the meaning of the word infidel.
