Abstract

Purslane leaf (Portulaca oleracea L.) is a type of weed plant as herbal medicine. The medicinal activity of P.oleracea was known related to alkaloids and flavonoid contents. However, the toxicity of that activity is obscure. Objectives: This research is aimed to reveal the acute toxicity potential of purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) leaf ethanolic extract. Material and Methods: The test was carried out on Artemia salina larvae by Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT). Toxicity properties were shown as LC50 value. This experimental research was conducted on 10 shrimp larvae (Artemia salina Leach) at each concentration of 0.01 ppm; 0.1 ppm; 1 ppm; 10 ppm; and 1000 ppm in 3 replications to control each extract solution. Toxicity tests were carried out at various concentrations of 10 ppm; 100 ppm; and 1000 ppm with 24-hour observation. Artemia salina Leach mortality data were analyzed by probit analysis to determine the LC50 value. Results: the obtained LC50 value of ethanolic extract of P.oleracea leaves was 163.71 ppm. Conclusions: As the value is less than 1.000 ppm, this result indicated the ethanolic extract has the acute toxicity on Artemia salina Leach Larvae by the BSLT bioassay method.
